Special Education

It is the mission of the Special Education Department of the Senatobia Municipal School District to identify students with disabilities from ages 3 to 21 through ongoing Child Find efforts and to provide a free and appropriate public education to each individual student with a disability.  The Special Education Department is guided by federal law as outlined in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act of 2004 (IDEA 2004) and state law. If you are aware of any student in the Senatobia Municipal School District who might be a student with a disability or who may require special education services in order to receive a free, appropriate public education, please contact our office.

Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 was created as a civil rights law to provide nondiscrimination protection to individuals with disabilities.  To be eligible for protection under Section 504, a student must (i) have a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities, (ii) have a record of such impairment, or (iii) be regarded as having such an impairment.  34 CFR 104.3(j)(1)  A Section 504 Committee determines eligibility and accommodations/services under Section 504, and eligible students each have an individual Section 504 Plan.  In order for a student to be determined “eligible” for protection under Section 504, the Section 504 Committee must determine that the impact of the impairment is substantially limiting when the student is compared to the typical peer.

Please contact our office with any questions or concerns.
